JUST CALL ME BASS MAGEE !!

Took a trip over to the sweet little pond today.  I brought the canoe and I was deep into the scum.I tried fishing with the fly rod and a couple poppers, but no luck.  Just way to many weeds to deal with when I would retrieve my line.  Plus don't want to ruin it since it's fairly new.  Decided to switch to the spin pole and fished a wacky worm like it was a scum frog.  The entire pond was covered with algae when I arrived. I was almost thinking about leaving due to the weeds and scum being out of control, but boy I'm glad I stayed.  It's been so long since I fished for Bass that I darn near forgot how much fun in it is.  I fished from about 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.  I ended up with about 25 Bass to hand, with some small ones and a few nice sized ones.  The biggest being somewhere between 15"-17".  I missed two huge Bass that leaped out after the worm.  Bummer.  Next time my friends, next time.  Tomorrow morning I will be heading out for some trout on my local stream.  My older brother Taj will be joining me.  I think I will have to introduce him to the Bomber :)  Here are a few pics from my son's point and shoot Kodak camera.  I couldn't risk bringing out the SLR.  Luckily it survived the float session.  Hope you enjoy!!

Until Next time.......Tight Lines to all!!!!!!

  1. Scum central! It still looks like a blast though. It's been awhile since I went bassin'. I bet you're the only guy willing to touch that pond right now, as scummy as it is.

Nothing wrong with having the place to yourself!

  2. Wow ... looks like you picked up on how to use that spinning gear almost immediately! LOL
Great fish TM, you should invest in a few weedless mouse and frog flies.

  3. TM,
    Great photos all.

    But that first one, outstanding.

    Thanks

  4. Really spin fishing is more effective than fly fishing in many scenarios. Especially for bass. It's amazing what kind of water bass can live in. With all that algae and vegetation you have to figure the oxygen level in that lake or pond is low.

  5. Looks like a great time to me , 25 fish in a couple hours and I'm ecstatic no matter how I catch em. A good candidate for a return trip and the flyrod with some poppers later after the scum is gone as well.

  7. Scum, I guess. Looks like my pond in mid-Summer only no Bass there. Nice assortment of fish, though.

  8. Awesome bass pic and the more the weeds the better the bass are---weeds and moss pades adds oxygen to the water and the bass eat it up. Great Post.

  12. You ever go for Smallies on the Wisconsin River? It's only one of the best SM Bass fisheries in the state and what? 10-20 miles from your place?
Great way to get through the dog-days without nettles, parsnip, thistles, sweat, gnats and skeeters if you ask me...well, some skeeters.
Sandbars and current seams...I'll be out there on Saturday. - Patsy

  14. LOAH,
Scum central for sure. The Bass were thrivin and hungry :) That little pond is a great little spot to just go about 4 minutes away and just get away for a while. Peaceful. Thanks , Tight Lines.

  15. John,
Thanks much. The Bass and Spin Rod go hand and hand. My little three wt. fly rod would have got a workout :) Definitely need to get some weedless flies for the Bass for sure. Tight Lines.

  16. BrkTrt,

  17. Kev2380,
Thanks. The spin rod was the right choice for sure. Lot less hassle with the weeds and trashing my fly line. The weeds actually helped the oxygen and it also has a nice fresh water spring rolling right into it. It also holds Crappie, Bluegill,Northern Pike, and some Perch. Sweet little place in the winter for ice fishing. Tight Lines.

  18. HPFF,
Thanks much. Definitely a good time. I like to throw in a fly with peacock on it for the crappie in there too. Definitely look forward to taking a few Bass on a popper. Tight Lines.

  20. Shoreman,
Thanks a lot. Those Bass were everywhere in there. They were hanging out in some of the thickest of weeds. Hungry too. Tight Lines

  21. Bill Trussell,
Thank you very much. Those Bass are really thriving over in that pond. It's no trespassing on three sides of the pond so I take the canoe out there and hammer them along the weedy shoreline. They were deep in to the weeds. Tight Lines.

  22. John McArdle,
Thanks much. The trout were getting sick of the flashes in there eyes :) The Bass really jumped on the chance to appear on Blogger. Tight Lines.

  23. Sanders,
Thanks a lot. Bass MaGee, Trout MaGee, hmmmmm I'm thinking Cutthroat MaGee next :) As long as it was those Bass drowning in the cabbage and not me. I was praying I didn't tip over in that canoe out there. I would have been screaming like a girl. Tight Lines.

  24. Cofisher,
Thanks much. Bass MaGee would probably make me some money some day if I could fish those tournaments, but Trout MaGee is where the beauty is. I love fishin Bass, but the beauty along those streams is something that you just can't beat. Tight Lines.

  25. Patsy,
It's been a while since I fished those sweet breaks along the Wisconsin River. I used to fish the Walleye a lot "back in the day" :) I got the parsnip on my hands and every time I scratch it I think of the trout caught, and it is always worth it. Be careful out there this weekend, she is a tricky mistress. Good luck bro and Tight Lines.

  26. Patsy,
I was waiting for someone to harass me about that glove :) I have always been kind of a sissy when it comes to holding fish. Except the trout, they don't spike you with their fins and I don't hold them by their teeth. Don't want to hurt my hand modeling hands now do I? ;) Tight Lines.

  27. Good Stuff, I wish I had a local pound I could go to. After the Scum clears off this fall it would be a great trip with a few poppers and and a 5 or 6 Wt.
