Earth Day and Piggish Rainbows :)

Every year we head out as a family on Earth Day and do some streamside garbage cleanup.  This year we headed to a local stream that I frequent and decided to hit it hard.  I told the kid's for every peice of trash they find, that they would get 5 cents.  They each ended up with $5.oo a peice.  I guess one man's trash really is someone elses treasure :)  They had a great time out there and my wife Bird and baby Finnigan were also able to make the trip.  The day was as beautiful as it gets and we all had a fantastic time improving the condition of the stream.  The number one item discarded this year were empty bottles of sports drinks.  Powerade, Gatorade etc...  Appearantly lazy people like their electrolites :)

After cleaning up the roadside and stream, I decided to head upstream to chase a few trout before the day ended.  At first nothing was biting then it slowly picked up.  Again I tossed the C.R.K. Zonker Minnow at them and after a while they were chasing it all over the holes.  Here are a few pics.  Hope you enjoy them.  :)

Until Next Time ...... Tight Lines to All !!!!!!

    1. Sanders,
Thanks man. The kid's really enjoy cleaning the stream up. It's amazing how a 5 year old girl can figure out where to put trash, but someone who is old enough to drive a car can't :) One stream down only 500 more to go :) Tight Lines.

  2. Very nice!! If only there were more people willing to take the initiative and do what you guys did all of our waterways would benefit greatly. Those kids are going to grow up being better people because of the habits you're instilling in them now , you can bet they won't be the ones littering our streams with Gatorade bottles!
Oh , and that rainbow IS a pig! Great fish.....

Thanks a lot man. It was a great feeling after we were done knowing we did something to help the stream out. The kids are troopers and don't complain while were out there. Those bows are eating and growing nicely. Tight Lines.

  3. Nice to see someone actually picking up trash for a change and those are some piggy bows. Is that stream stocked? The bows look like they are in spawning colors

    1. Mark,
Thanks much. This stream is stocked and also has natural reproducing fish. The big bow is a Broodstock for sure :) It seemed like it could have been full of eggs. NOt sure if they are spawning or not. I will have to check into that. Tight lines.

  6. That is a great idea! I'm definitely taking my daughter out next year for an Earth Day cleanup. She's just begun warming up to monetary bribery.
