Although I may not be able to fish some of these spots right now, I am still able to spend time hiking them reflecting on a wonderful summer come and gone.  :)

IS IT A BOY OR IS IT A GIRL ??????

Does anyone know how exactly to tell whether a trout is a male or if it is a female ?????  I have always gone by the shape of it's face to determine.  I usually believe the ones with a slight kype forming to be the male trout.  The females are determined by how blunt of a face the have.  I am not sure if this is a correct way to determine this or not, so don't quote me on it.  I am sure some of you out there know exactly how to determine this and I would love to hear some input on the matter.  I like to name the fish as I release them and I can't help but think I may have insulted a trout or two by naming them according to the wrong gender :)  Below are some pics of fish that I believe I have guessed right.  Maybe or maybe not ?

MALE ( Maybe?)

FEMALE ( I think ??)

Now with that said, I am still left wondering about those that have features of both male and female.  The ones that you just can't be sure about.  Pictured Below.

HERMAPHRODITE ??????

Well there's my two cents worth on the matter, but I am pretty sure it's not 100%  correct.  A while back I did a post on a hat trick of a life time for Trout MaGee.  We are due to have a new member of the family come this February.  We decided to find out the gender of the baby.  We have done this with each of our children and the doctors have been right 2 for 2.  Some people don't believe in finding out the gender of their child and that's their decision to make.  Power to them.  The excitement and anticipation is just too much for my wife and I, so we love finding this out in advance.  This time the doctor knew within 2 seconds of starting the ultrasound.  So according to my technique in determining trouts gender, the following picture is what we are having. :)  I can't wait!!!!!

In case I am wrong about the trout,  IT'S A BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any name suggestions for our new fishing buddy ??????????  Remember our other two children's names are Ocean and Sephora.  I am leaning towards Trout but I am open to anything having to due with fishing, nature, or earth in general.  :)

Last Day of Trout Season in Wisconsin

Sept 30th was the last official day of trout season here in Wisconsin's Driftless Area.  I realize that this post comes a little late, but better late than never I guess.

I woke up late, but not too bad considering I didn't even set the alarm.  Up at about 7:00 a.m. and filling my belly with 2 Bacon Egg & Cheese biscuits at about 8:00.  Arrived at the stream of choice at about 8:15.  On this day, the last day, I chose a stream that I knew would produce some nice Brookies and hopefully a few Browns as well

As I walked along in absolute peace, my senses were at full attention.  The smell of the air, that only comes when fall is here.  The sounds of the leaves, as I watch them drop from trees, while the wind blows.  The sound of the huge 8 point buck crashing through the stream within yards of me.  Scaring the crap out of me.  It was one of those days where the clouds move across the sky and it goes from sunny to dark every other minute.  The  wind was making it difficult to cast and the hooks were popping out right and left.  It was perfect.

I made it up to the final hole around noon.  I was perched up high to where I could see each fish come out from it's hiding spot and attack the flies.  It made for some easy hook sets.  I had to be on my way so I hiked the trail back and headed for home.  About 2 miles downstream from where I just was, there is a really nice bridge hole.  I had no choice but to stop and see if I could coax some Browns out of their hiding spots.  The last trout I caught out of this hole really had some nice fall colors going on.  At first I thought I had on a huge Brook Trout.  Probably my favorite trout of the season.

Finally I made it home.  My wife and son headed of to swim lessons and Sephora and I stayed home.  She loves trout fishing so I told her we could head out and fish for a while if she wanted.  On went the boots and we were off.  I can't imagine a better way to finish out the season.  The pressure to bring a fish to hand was high.  One last fish for the season, one last memory.
