IS IT A BOY OR IS IT A GIRL ??????

Does anyone know how exactly to tell whether a trout is a male or if it is a female ?????  I have always gone by the shape of it's face to determine.  I usually believe the ones with a slight kype forming to be the male trout.  The females are determined by how blunt of a face the have.  I am not sure if this is a correct way to determine this or not, so don't quote me on it.  I am sure some of you out there know exactly how to determine this and I would love to hear some input on the matter.  I like to name the fish as I release them and I can't help but think I may have insulted a trout or two by naming them according to the wrong gender :)  Below are some pics of fish that I believe I have guessed right.  Maybe or maybe not ?

MALE ( Maybe?)

FEMALE ( I think ??)

Now with that said, I am still left wondering about those that have features of both male and female.  The ones that you just can't be sure about.  Pictured Below.

HERMAPHRODITE ??????

Well there's my two cents worth on the matter, but I am pretty sure it's not 100%  correct.  A while back I did a post on a hat trick of a life time for Trout MaGee.  We are due to have a new member of the family come this February.  We decided to find out the gender of the baby.  We have done this with each of our children and the doctors have been right 2 for 2.  Some people don't believe in finding out the gender of their child and that's their decision to make.  Power to them.  The excitement and anticipation is just too much for my wife and I, so we love finding this out in advance.  This time the doctor knew within 2 seconds of starting the ultrasound.  So according to my technique in determining trouts gender, the following picture is what we are having. :)  I can't wait!!!!!

In case I am wrong about the trout,  IT'S A BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any name suggestions for our new fishing buddy ??????????  Remember our other two children's names are Ocean and Sephora.  I am leaning towards Trout but I am open to anything having to due with fishing, nature, or earth in general.  :)

Until Next Time..........Tight Lines to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Well, you might have to name them with names that go both ways...like "Gail"...and then let the fish sort it out later.

  2. First of all, congrats!

Secondly, the one you're unsure about is a female. You're sort-of right about the blunt shaped head, but the best way is to look at the lips, whether they extend back further than the eye.

Females will have the shorter of the two and usually will be less colorful. Body shape comes into play as well, kind of what you were referring to with the head.

Males are usually darker, hookjaw (old ones), and sort of triangular in shape compared to females.

  3. Another bull in the family...Congrats! Now you, Ocean, and little Magee have the numbers. It's smooth sailing from here on out.

I have the same method of identification as you, so I stick to names that work for both genders, like Shaun, Kelly, Sam, Charlie, etc...

    Tight lines my friend...congrats!

I say congrats to you and your wife.

  5. Congradulations man!!!!!
Fish ID is my method too, all I can say for sure is, they are all Browns. Male or Female doesn't matter much once you hold them for the first time... but I think you know that already.

  6. Congrats on the new fishing buddy to come. You'd better start carrying an ultra sound machine with you on the river for those fish. The longer jaw line with at least some kype is generally a clue, but trout under 20" can be tough to read. It's too early for me to think about names right now. Maybe later.

  7. Congratulations on a new Wisconsin boy. As far as male or female, all you have to do is turn it over, spread the fins, and see what it is. OK, so that was off the wall, but it was intended to make you laugh. It's early.

  8. The Driftless will soon be over run with MaGees. Congrats!
Sit the trout down in front of a tv. If it watches porn it's not likely a girl.

  9. Thats the way I've always been able to tell. It's not 100% but it's the best way besides cutting em open, and I don't think they release well after that. Seems like the bigger lake run fish are much easier to tell than the average size stream brown.

  10. Trout
Sorry no help here from me, but if it was warmwater bass or gills I could help. I have talk to some guys below the tailrace that said the males have more of a pointed head look---don't know if that is correct or not, but that is my two cents. thanks for sharing

  11. I just randomly decide if a trout is male or female :) By the time I've taken a pic and let them go it just doesn't seem to matter. Congrats on the newest fishing buddy!
