The Wind Damn Near Killed Me :)

As I was sitting on our couch daydreaming about tossing some flies at any trout willing, I heard a weird, unfamiliar sound.  I thought maybe the wind blew one of our deck chairs across the deck so I hopped up quick to see what was going on outside.  When I discovered what made the noise my jaw dropped and I had that feeling in my stomach like flying past a police officer at 80 and he just keeps driving :)  This huge old White Pine had been blown over by the strong winds and the rotting of the tree combined.  Had this fallen in a different direction it could have demolished our home.  Needless to say we all thanked are lucky stars and now we don't have to worry about being crushed by it anymore.  I will miss seeing it but that is a price am willing to pay:)  The wind was whipping the next day as well, but I didn't let it stop me from fishing a new stretch on my home stream.  After living next to this creek for over 7 years I had yet to fish this stretch due to the insane weeds and marshlands surrounding it.  The DNR recently did a controlled burn on this stretch which made for some sweet hiking.  The fish were holding in deep sandy channels.  It was kind of like fishing off the breaks of sandbars in the Wisconsin River for walleye.  The small stretch I covered seemed to be holding some nice healthy trout.  It was a beautiful windy sunshiny day!! Hope you enjoy the pics :)

Until Next Time.......Tight Lines to All !!!!!

  3. Trout,
Nice post here. I sympathize entirely with the love/fear factor involving big trees in the yard. You were lucky. I have 2 super spruces and maples in my yard that I love and yet give me the willies when a wind comes kicking. I've enjoyed your region of SW Wisconsin. Long ago went to high school in LaCrosse and tramped the bluffs and hills with a fly rod and a gun. Best,

  5. That had to be scary as hell!! I have several large trees that tower my house and I worry about them at times...I should hire someone to check on their health.

    Nice pics, too!

  6. Those White Pines can be monsters, we have them in the Adirondacks and when they come over the ground shakes ! Glad nobody was close by. The wind has been kicking up here in the east too ! This year the hatches have been coming off just when the jet stream is hanging over us whipping things up. Makes fishing some days a real challenge

    1. Mark,
The wind has been a real bugger here lately. Those pines are all over on a couple of the creeks I fish and when they start swaying I keep my head on a swivel :) Tight Lines.

  7. You should live where I do. I have one tree next right next to the house that goes a good 24" and 15 or 20 more the same size within 50 feet of the house. Last year we had 8 trees go down during the winter, but only one about 8 inches that came close to the house. Remember the into the truck post?

Thanks. Gotta look out for those big ole trees. 8 trees down around me and we wouldn't have a whole lot left :) Tight Lines.

    1. Kev,
You can't beat free landscaping. The tree was actually the neighbors across the way so I am glad I don't have to deal with the clean up :) Tight Lines

  9. That's a good-sized tree! I had a similar experience a few years ago. I was playing with my then 1 year old daughter when I heard a loud noise out back. I went to the sliding glass door to find the top of a tree of similar size from across the yard now on my back deck. It was a very close call.

    1. Kiwi,
That tree was extra huge. If you look behind it at the wood pile it gives you an idea of how huge it was. Watch out for those falling trees. Tight Lines

  10. Glad you was safe from the tree--I had my son-in-law to help me cut a tree that was next our house last. I had visions of it hitting the house when a strong wind came along. Good Post--by the way I really like your header image.
